How We Test

Our reviews are built on real research, not sponsored placements. Here's how we evaluate the products we recommend.

Our process

Every product on HomeSystemsGuide goes through a structured evaluation. We research manufacturer specifications, aggregate user feedback from verified purchase reviews, and compare products within their category to identify meaningful differences — not just marketing language.

What we look at

  • Performance — Does it do what it claims? We compare real-world reports against spec-sheet promises.
  • Value — Is the price justified relative to competitors? We consider both upfront cost and long-term ownership.
  • Reliability — We look at warranty coverage, brand track record, and patterns in user-reported issues.
  • Ease of use — Installation complexity, app quality, and day-to-day usability all factor in.
  • Smart home integration — Compatibility with ecosystems like Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, and Matter.

How we score

Products receive a score out of 10 based on the criteria above. A score of 7+ means we'd recommend it for most buyers in that category. Scores below 7 indicate trade-offs that limit the audience. We don't publish reviews of products we wouldn't consider using ourselves.
